Should Men Wear Engagement Rings?

Posted by ThinkBig Analytics on

After a couple gets engaged, one of the first things friends and family ask is to see the engagement ring. While engagement rings are traditionally associated with women, men do occasionally wear engagement rings. Here’s what you need to know about male engagement rings.

The History Behind Engagement Rings

Though early Romans gifted rings in place of a dowry, the first engagement ring was commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria for his partner, Mary of Burgundy.

Sweden and Chile are two countries that have a tradition of male engagement rings. In the US, engagement rings didn’t become a trend until the middle of the 20th century. Thanks to the “a diamond are forever campaign,” the popularity of engagement rings skyrocketed.

Throughout the history of engagement rings, it’s primarily been women who wear the ring. A small movement in the 1920s resulted in some men wearing engagement rings, but the trend didn’t last.

The Decision to Wear an Engagement Ring

In today’s culture, the decision to wear a male engagement ring should be based on one thing: your personal preferences. If you want to show off your commitment or appreciate the symbolism behind a ring, feel free to wear one.

Or, perhaps you enjoy wearing jewelry and accessories. A unique ring that reflects your personality is an excellent addition to your wardrobe. You can reuse the ring as your wedding band, or you might decide to wear your wedding ring on one hand and your engagement ring on the other.

While more men are opting to wear engagement rings, there are plenty of males who decide to wait until they’re married to begin wearing a ring.
